TA Psychotherapy
TA can be applied as a method of psychotherapy for a wide range of human dysfunctions. TA provides methods to help reach awareness, understanding, and constructive changes in our emotional, belief and behavioural systems.
As an approach to psychotherapy TA places active emphasis on both internal dynamics and interpersonal relationships, paying attention to the individual's capacity for thinking and feeling. It is a focused approach based on a therapeutic contract. The therapeutic relationship is one of respect and shared responsibility.
TA therapists very often teach their patients or clients some of the elements of the theory in order to build a common thinking base. This provides them with the language and understanding needed to develop new options for resolving their life problems. It is also an aid for overcoming impasses created by the early injunctions received from parental figures which conflict with the individula's present day needs for autonomy and self expression.
TA in general are quite eclectic in integrating a variety of modes such as cognitive, fantasy, body centred and family systems approaches in their work. The system is open to all approaches which may be helpful in reaching the therapeutic goal. The therapist uses TA theory to follow what is happening in the therapy and may or may not use the theoretical language with the patient or client.
The methodology includes various therapeutic tools such as contracting, confronting passive bahaviours, redecision, parenting and group process which reflect the highly interactive nature of TA.
