We take great pleasure in welcoming you to the 4th Transactional Analysis Conference organised by the Transactional Analysis Association, Singapore (TAAS). This is a special year as it marks the centennial birth of Dr Eric Berne in Montreal. Dr Eric Berne is the father and originator of TA, and today, we commemorate this birth, even as we remember his contributions and the legacy he has given to us.

According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2011 is the Year of the Golden Rabbit which brings with it a time of peace and harmony, a time for negotiation, a period of joy and happiness. So, in keeping with this spirit, the theme of our Conference is ¨C Celebrating Life with TA! Through this Conference, we aim to highlight not only the profound and practical applications of TA, but also the fun, spontaneity, and authenticity of TA.

We are proud to announce that we have the privilege and honour of having Dr Stephen B. Karpman to be our keynote speaker. Dr Karpman won the Eric Berne Scientific Award for his work on the ¡°Drama Triangle as a Powerful Model in Game Analysis¡±.

TAAS has also put together eighteen concurrent workshops facilitated by experts and interesting presenters, both local and foreign, focusing on different areas of transactional analysis. The speakers will cover different issues - mindfulness, spirituality, cultural scripting, communication, coaching, re-decision work, psychodrama, family relationships, and education.

Indeed, you will discover TA and you will celebrate all its complexities and diversity!

And so, to set the right tone and to help drum up excitement for our Conference, let us "Celebrate Life with TA", with a group of young energetic percussionists!

CONFERENCE SYNOPSIS

KEYNOTE ADDRESS
IS THERE A “GAME-FREE” RELATIONSHIP?

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Stephen Karpman

Dr. Karpman will discuss Eric Berne's breakthrough new rules of theory making in the 1960's and tell anecdotes of the life back then. It will be explained how those principles were used to add a dozen new combinations of the Drama Triangle and their escapes. That followed over the years by the next step of developing a “Game-free Intimacy” Trilogy for honest and improved relationships at home and work.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 1 & 14
A TA-GESTALT EXPERENTIAL MINITHON

Facilitators: Tony White & Jan Coleman

In this workshop Tony and Jan will demonstrate counselling work on participants who have an issue to explore. This will be done using techniques from Transactional Analysis and Gestalt therapy. In addition to this they will demonstrate how to use group process, how to use the transference or the relationship between client and therapist and how to establish a rapport that helps the counselling process. Tony and Jan will also work with depression, looking at how these people deal with their anger problems and low self esteem.

Tony and Jan will demonstrate counselling strategies for dealing with anxiety, phobias and panic attacks by working with the Child ego state's fears that developed early in childhood. They will use regressive counselling skills like two chair to demonstrate these. In the minithon Tony and Jan will also demonstrate diagnosing personality types and how to develop treatment plans for longer term work with the client.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 2
TRANSACTIONAL LEADERSHIP

Facilitator: Abe Wagner

This very interesting concept has been taught to parents and leaders in corporate, educational and non- profit settings. It explains how the combination of structure and strokes (positive attention and constructive feed back) are the keys to leading and managing effectively. This practical model can be immediately implemented in any setting. Learn the secrets to “carefronting” diplomatically. This workshop is a must for anyone in a leadership position.

Learning Points:
• Understand the power of structure and strokes when implementing any plan.
• Learn when to lead and when to delegate
• Learn that all three types of strokes are a necessity for effectively leadership
• Learn ten “carefrontation” (diplomatic feedback) techniques
• Learn to lead smarter not harder.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 3
EXPATRIATION: A STORY OF ATTACHMENT & AMBIVALENCE

Facilitator: Viviane Dubos

For the past 8 years in Singapore, Viviane’s focus has been to help people in the French-speaking community to cope with expatriation issues. She has observed repetitions of similar challenges, related to ambivalence, occurring in her clients’ lives. Ambivalence could be expressed as an inability to decide. Sometimes ambivalence would be obvious in the way they engage in the relationship with the therapist. At other times, it showed up as “border-line” behaviour.

The purpose of this workshop is to reflect on the attachment styles and needs within the expatriate community and to explore how a therapist can deal with the ambivalence occurring in the transference relation. The goals would be to explore the nature of the ambivalence and to determine how therapists or counselors can help people to get more balance in their life:
• Ambivalence and personality structures
• Ambivalence and Ego states
• Ambivalence and counter-transference
• Treatment plan and some helpful techniques

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 4, 12, & 17
TA & DRAMA THERAPY: REHEARSAL FOR LIFE

Facilitators: Dr. Armand Volkas & Cheryl Leong

Drama therapy uses acting, improvisation and psychodrama as therapeutic tools. It promotes spontaneity, creativity and expressiveness. Action methods offer opportunities for participants to practice new and desired behaviors. In this workshop, the facilitators will demonstrate the ways that drama therapy can illuminate TA principles.

This experiential session will show participants how drama therapy can coach clients to identify and express feelings authentically and congruently and learn to think clearly without the “contamination” of inappropriate ego states. Drama therapy techniques also offer the opportunity to uncover and change self-defeating life scripts and increase the energy in and competence of underdeveloped ego states.

The experiential portion of the workshop will focus on the application of drama therapy and TA as a powerful tool in working clinically with individuals, couples and groups, as well as in working effectively with organizations. The didactic portion of the workshop will offer a theoretical basis and rationale for the use of drama therapy in tandem with TA in multiple settings.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 5 & 16
SCRIPT UNFURLING IN A CULTURAL CONTEXT

Facilitator: P.K. Saru

This workshop aims to look into Cultural Scripting by focusing on the formation of the three significant aspects of the Script. The uniqueness of each of our Scripts in terms of the cultural influences and context is examined. How do we explore what needs to be done to effect change and what do we actually do to bring about this change – these are some of the aspects examined from the Transactional Analysis perspective.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 6
THE TRANSACTIONAL COACH

Facilitator: Jean Maxwell

In our professional lives, Coaching is a process which successful leaders use to develop extraordinary performance from ordinary people. In our personal lives, Coaching is a process, which successful people use to create, develop and maintain balanced life goals in a focused and effective fashion. With the increased demands on everyone’s time today, Coaching is no longer a luxury for most of us. It is a need.

The Transactional Coach uses the powerful model and practice of Transactional Analysis to enhance and advance strategic coaching methods in both our professional and personal lives. In this seminar, Master Coach and Transactional Analyst, Jean Maxwell will identify the fundamental elements of the Transactional Coaching method and demonstrate some of its basic coaching methods. This will be an interactive session with time for participants to practice their skills.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 7 (FULL DAY WORKSHOP)
MOVING OUT OF THE DRAMA TRIANGLE INTO GAME-FREE COMMUNICATION FOR COUPLES & COACHES

Facilitator: Dr. Stephen Karpman

Dr. Karpman’s workshop will trace the development of the drama triangle from the escapes from the drama triangle to the development of the new replacement models for intimate and open communication at work and at home. He will introduce his new original TA models that include the barrier-erecting intimacy blocking Loser’s Loops, the Six Fightmakers, and the Drama Triangle switches – all with their small group exercises that will include their positive opposites. This will be followed by the positive barrier-breaking Intimacy Scale, Personality Pinwheel, and Support Circles exercises. There will be an added discussion of the ideal relationship using the Five Trust Contracts, the Love Me, Like Me list, and The Generosity Scale. The demonstrations are taught with safe exercises that can be easily reproduced by therapists and coaches to teach game-free openness and communication skills for the home, office, and work place.

*Note: This is a full day workshop from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. Enrollment in Concurrent Workshop 7 indicates that the delegate is participating in 2 concurrent workshop sessions.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 8
REDECISION THERAPY

Facilitators: Dr. Jessica Leong & Irene Yong

Re-decision Therapy is an approach that integrates Berne’s cognitive framework of Transactional Analysis theory and Fritz Perls’ affective principles and methods drawn from Gestalt Therapy. It is a powerful tool for therapeutic change. It emphasizes CHILDHOOD or early DECISIONS made at a feeling position. Individuals can choose to think, feel and behave differently in ways that they have not permitted themselves. Irene and Jessica will facilitate any participant who wants to change any aspect of their lives. The objective is to demonstrate and teach Re-decision work.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 9
CELEBRATING LIFE WITH TA

Facilitator: Ken Mellor

At its foundations, TA is an affirmation of life, freedom, decision-making capacity, personal responsibility, and options. Its processes emphasise that people can change, past scripting can be resolved and that they can be released from their internal ‘prisons’ into the freedom of life.

Berne’s definition of an autonomous, well-functioning person was of someone with the capacity for awareness, spontaneity and intimacy. These qualities and principles of TA will be discussed. Participants will have the opportunity to explore them by using exercises. Ken has expanded Berne’s position with the introduction of a fourth quality—integrity. (See TAJ, Autonomy with Integrity, V.38 No.3, July 2008)

Ken will take participants through several practices that promote wholeness and personal integrity. These will emphasize the value of claiming, welcoming and experiencing difficult or uncomfortable experiences, perceptions and situations, as well as their complements. Not always welcome, embracing these types of experiences is part of the full celebration of life, and leads to wisdom and fulfillment.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 10
TEACHING & LEARNING WITH TA (MANDARIN)

Facilitators: Lee Yee Sing & Liu Hung

Education is a journey full of opportunities. We face the constant challenge of guiding our young to navigate the diverse educational landscape. It is in our best interest to motivate them and negotiate towards self-awareness. The objective of this session attempts to understand these challenges and facilitate decision-making using a TA perspective. Participants will be involved in a discovery process with the presenters and gain personal experience to help the child seize opportunities.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 11
GROWTH & CHANGE WITH TA

Facilitators: Grace Goh & Jenny Boey

This workshop is essentially a sharing of the facilitators’ experiences from their small groups of women and how TA was used as a tool to facilitate an inward change in their lives. Over ten years ago, the facilitators decided to use TA to run their parenting classes. Small groups of women formed circles of trust where they learnt TA concepts and were committed to doing the exercises. Once the awareness happened through the exercises, it was like the opening of a window. Though sometimes painful, the truth towards wholesomeness was wonderfully healing. TA is essentially an experience and working through the exercises is the key. Once the group understood the TA concepts, they began to speak a difference language, often inviting each other to see ourselves differently and more kindly. Over the years most groups came back for more TA. That was how the facilitator discovered something real was happening in their lives, as well as that of the trainers.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 13
TA & SPIRITUALITY

Facilitator: Eugene Fernandez

Our scripts have brought about a dichotomy between the spirit and body. It does impede our Child to relate effectively with Self and others. TA enables us to discover a harmony between body (sexuality) and spirit, male and female, love (intimacy) and faith, human and divine, and worship and community.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 15
MINDFULNESS FROM A TA PERSPECTIVE

Facilitator: Ken Mellor

Combinations of mindfulness meditation and personal growth, and development systems such as TA are increasingly attracting attention these days. During this workshop, Ken will encourage participants to experience three main aspects of mindfulness:

1. Concentrating attention on the here-and-now
2. Deliberately paying attention and doing so without judgement
3. Acknowledging and accepting each sensation, feeling, or thought.

He will also introduce and use exercises particularly in relation to grounding, the value of guiding awareness in particular ways, and embracing experience instead of distancing from it. (See TAJ, Autonomy with Integrity, V.38 No.3, July 2008)

Finally, he will explore: The importance within TA of Adult processing, cultivating acute awareness (internal and transactional), acknowledging what is ‘real’, dealing with discounting (of self, other or situation), and using mindfulness-type techniques to find release from unhelpful past experiences and programming.

CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS 18
Part 1: USING TA TO ENHANCE PARENTING EXPERIENCE

Facilitator: Sumithra Sharatkumar

Parenting is one milestone that can bring out, both the best and worst parts of our personalities and conditioning. What makes it even more challenging for our current generation, is that we are somewhat torn between the tapes in our Parent, the later learning in our Adult and the inherent responses stored in our Child.

The aim of this workshop is to use TA concepts to address some of the day-to-day challenges and dilemmas in parenting, such as: Understanding Emotions, Encouraging Co-operation, Building self-esteem, Understanding Punishment Styles, Stereo-typing children, and Fostering independence.

The techniques conceived help make parenting a more natural and relaxed experience, while providing children
with valuable tools to become more balanced and integrated individuals.

Part 2: USING TA TO ENHANCE FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS

Facilitator: Kong Seet Mui

Through the eyes of the community at large, the genesis of Transactional Analysis was the discovery of a basic life skill called communication. Thereafter, through years of intensive research, it grew to a holistic approach of self- awareness and effective relationship management. The focus of this workshop is to enable the participants to reflect and create a better understanding of self; and to equip them with simple communication framework to relate with their loved ones and enhance family relationships.

Singapore, the stunning centrepiece of southeast Asia, is a cultural pot pourri that leaves the unsuspecting visitor dazzled by the containment of so many influences upon one small island. Sir Stamford Raffles, a nineteenth-century British civil servant, brought the 'Lion City' to world prominence after searching for a trading station to counter the Dutch influence in the Straits of Malacca, and trade has remained the island's mainstay.

City attractions include unrivalled shopping in Orchard Road, the cultural quarters of Chinatown, Geylang Serai and Little India with the world's first night safari.

Sentosa is Singapore's premier island resort getaway with multi-faceted appeal, teeming with events all year round. Just 15 minutes from the city, it is a unique blend of leisure and recreational facilities including family attractions, sea sports, golf as well as hotel accommodation and retreats.

Yet the natural world is never far away, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve has a significant area of primary rainforest within its boundaries, while for the adventurous Sungei Buluh Nature Park offers the chance for trekking. Check out Pulau Ubin's mangrove forest, or Kusu site of Taoists' annual pilgrimage.

Culture lovers can enjoy the fusion of Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures, the main ethnic groups, with museums, gardens, parks, mosques, temples and synagogues testimony to the island's rich national heritage.
